Counting the days between two dates

Working out how many days separate two dates by hand is deceptively error-prone: months have different lengths, February changes with leap years, and it's easy to be off by one depending on whether you count the start day. This calculator does it exactly — enter a start and end date and get the precise number of days, weeks and months between them.

People reach for it constantly: counting down to a due date, holiday or deadline; working out an age or an anniversary; calculating a notice period, a rental duration, or how long ago something happened. The order of the dates doesn't matter — the duration is the same either way.

Days, weeks, months — and why they can seem to disagree

The tool shows the gap several ways at once: a total number of days, the equivalent in weeks, a total number of months, and a precise years-months-days breakdown. These describe the same span from different angles. The years-months-days view is what people mean by 'how old' or 'how long' in everyday speech, while the total-days figure is what you want for precise counting.

Because calendar months vary in length, 'total months' is an approximation of whole months elapsed, whereas 'total days' is exact. When precision matters — interest that accrues daily, a countdown, a legal deadline — use the day count. Everything is computed in your browser.

Inclusive or exclusive counting?

A common source of off-by-one confusion is whether both endpoints count. If an event runs 'from the 1st to the 3rd', is that two days or three? For a pure duration (how much time passed), it's two days. For counting days you'll be somewhere (a hotel stay, a festival pass), you often want to include both ends, which is one more.

This calculator reports the elapsed duration between the dates. If your situation needs both endpoints counted, simply add one day to the result. Keeping that distinction in mind avoids the classic scheduling mistake.
