Almost every kind of writing comes with a limit. Essays and dissertations specify a word count; university applications and cover letters cap it; social platforms count characters (and a tweet, a meta description or an SMS each has its own ceiling). Knowing your exact count as you write means you hit the target without guessing or pasting into a separate tool at the end.

Counts also help you write better. A paragraph that runs long, a sentence count that reveals you've written one 80-word monster, or a reading-time estimate that's double what your audience will tolerate — these are signals you can act on while drafting, not after.

As you type or paste, the tool updates several figures live: words, characters with and without spaces, sentences, paragraphs and an estimated reading time. Words are counted by splitting on whitespace; sentences by counting sentence-ending punctuation; paragraphs by blank-line breaks. Everything is computed in your browser, so even a confidential document is never uploaded.

The reading time is based on an average adult reading speed of roughly 200 words per minute. It's a quick guide for articles, scripts and presentations — useful for judging whether a blog post is a two-minute read or a ten-minute commitment.

Be aware of which unit your limit uses. Academic work is almost always counted in words, while social posts, SMS and SEO fields (title tags, meta descriptions) are counted in characters — and there, spaces count too. This tool shows both so you're never caught out.

If you're writing to a strict word count, aim to land slightly under and tighten from there; padding to reach a maximum usually reads worse than trimming to fit. For character-limited fields, remember that some platforms count emoji and certain symbols as more than one character, so leave a little headroom.
