What is HEIC, and why won't it open?
HEIC stands for High Efficiency Image Container — it is the format Apple iPhones and iPads have used by default since iOS 11 (2017). Under the hood it uses HEIF/HEVC compression, which stores a photo at roughly half the size of an equivalent JPG while keeping more detail and supporting features like depth maps and Live Photos.
The problem is compatibility. HEIC is excellent on Apple devices but poorly supported almost everywhere else: many Windows programs, older Android phones, web upload forms, content management systems and chat apps simply refuse to open a .heic file or show a blank thumbnail. That is why people search for 'HEIC to JPG' the moment they try to send an iPhone photo to a non-Apple device.
Converting to JPG turns your iPhone photo into the universal format every device, browser and website understands, with no special software required.
How this HEIC converter works
Decoding HEIC requires the HEVC codec, which most browsers do not include for licensing reasons. This tool loads a small open-source HEIC decoder directly into your browser the first time you use it, decodes the image locally, and re-encodes it as a standard JPG. Nothing is uploaded — your photos never leave your device, which matters because phone photos often contain private moments and location data.
Each photo you add is converted independently, so you can batch a whole camera roll export at once and download the JPGs one by one.
Stopping your iPhone from making HEIC files
If you convert HEIC photos often, you can tell your iPhone to shoot JPG instead. Open Settings → Camera → Formats and choose 'Most Compatible'. New photos will be saved as JPG, while existing HEIC photos stay as they are — convert those here whenever you need them.
Keep in mind that 'Most Compatible' produces larger files and drops a few HEIC-only features. Many people leave the iPhone on 'High Efficiency' to save space and simply convert the handful of photos they need to share.
